Intra-industry trade and labour market adjustment: A reassessment using data on individual workers

We re-examine the relationship between intra-industry trade and labour reallocation, using individual-level data on manufacturing worker moves in the United Kingdom. The contribution of this analysis is twofold. First, we estimate the impact of intra-industry trade on worker moves between occupations as well as between industries. Second, we run individual-level regressions that allow us to control for worker heterogeneity. Our results suggest that intra-industry trade does have the stipulated attenuating effect on worker moves, both between occupations and between industries, but that this effect is relatively small compared to other determinants of labour reallocation

Raba Kistner, Inc. (RKI), was contracted by the Fort Bend Independent School District (FBISD) (CLIENT) to conduct archaeological investigations for approximately 7.31-acres located near Arcola, Fort Bend County, Texas, that is proposed to be developed with a high school campus (Figure 1-1). In April 2019, RKI conducted an intensive pedestrian survey with shovel testing of approximately 80-acres immediately east, north, and south of the current 7.31-acre project area (Matthews and Ward 2019). The survey was conducted under Texas Antiquities Committee (TAC) Permit Number 8847 in advance of construction of the FBISD High School Campus #12 (Matthews and Ward 2019). After the completion of the 2019 investigations, the original location of the campus was revised and shifted north, south, and west, extending into 7.31-acres that was not previously surveyed (Figure 1-2). New investigations of the new 7.31-acres were undertaken to accommodate the shift in location of proposed FBISD Campus #12; the results of this survey are detailed in this report. The 7.31-acre survey was conducted under TAC Permit Number 9359. The project took place on lands to be owned and controlled by the CLIENT, an entity of the State of Texas. As such, the project fell under the jurisdiction of the Antiquities Code of Texas (ACT) (Texas Natural Resource Code, Title 9, Chapter 191), which is administered by the Texas Historical Commission (THC). The investigations included a background review and a pedestrian survey augmented by shovel testing. The background review revealed that no archaeological sites had been previously recorded within the Area of Potential Effects (APE). RKI conducted an intensive pedestrian survey with shovel testing in an effort to locate cultural deposits. A total of sixteen shovel tests were attempted within the approximately 7.31-acre APE, one of which could not be completed due to dense vegetation and water covering the ground surface. All shovel tests were negative for cultural materials. Disturbances were observed throughout the APE, predominately from the construction of irrigation/drainage canals, roads, and agricultural practice. RKI has made a good faith effort to identify cultural resources within the APE. No significant deposits or features were identified during the intensive pedestrian survey. As a result, RKI does not recommend further archaeological investigations within the APE. However, should changes be made to the project APE, further work may be required. All field records and photographs produced during investigations will be permanently house at the Center for Archaeological Research at the University of Texas at San Antonio

Raba Kistner, Inc. (RKI) was contracted by Harris County Engineering Department (CLIENT) to conduct archaeological investigations in support of road improvements along 5.35 miles (8.6 kilometer [km]) of existing road along House Road, Bauer Hockley Road, Becker Road, Kickapoo Road, and Badtke Road, located in northwestern Harris County, Texas. The purpose of this investigation was to identify any surface-exposed or shallowly buried cultural deposits within the limits of the proposed undertaking and, if possible, assess their significance and eligibility for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) and for formal designation as State Antiquities Landmarks (SALs). As the project will be conducted on publicly-owned land and is sponsored by the Harris County Engineering Department, an entity of the State of Texas, the project was subject to review under the Antiquities Code of Texas (ACT) (Texas Natural Resources Code, Title 9, Chapter 191). All work was conducted in accordance with the Archaeological Survey Standards for Texas, as set forth by the Council of Texas Archaeologists (CTA) and the Texas Historical Commission (THC) under Texas Antiquities Committee Permit Number 9623. Investigations consisted of a background review and intensive pedestrian survey augmented with shovel testing within the area of potential effects (APE). The background review revealed that the majority of the project area is underlain by soils derived from loamy deposits of the Pliocene-age Willis Formation. One area along Bauer Hockley Road totaling 1,100-feet (335 meters [m]) contained Holocene-age deposits. As such, in a background review submitted for consultation to the THC, RKI recommended that archaeological investigations focus on the area containing the Holocene-age deposits. Based on the information provided in the background review, the THC concurred with the recommendation. Therefore, the APE for the project is defined as the one 1,100-feet (335 m) area along Bauer Hockley Road within the 75-foot (22.8 m) right-of-way (ROW), totaling approximately 1.89-acres (0.76 hectares [ha]). Field investigations were conducted on October 7, 2020. Antonio E. Padilla served as the Principal Investigator for the project and all fieldwork was conducted by Staff Archaeologists Adam Birge, Chris Matthews, and Archaeologist Tiffany Lindley. Report preparation was conducted by Tiffany Lindley. Adam Birge and Bruce Martin provided geographical information system (GIS) during fieldwork and report production. During the pedestrian survey of the APE, it was found that the area had been lightly graded for the existing roadbed with both shoulders consisting of graded shoulders. The shoulders were observed to slope downwards to the tree line and in some cases along the northern side of the APE, upwards towards the tree line. Disturbances observed within the APE consisted of an existing culvert box and guard rails that had been installed at the crossing of Little Cypress Creek. As a result of the pedestrian survey, 4 shovel tests (CM1–CM2 and TL1–TL2) were attempted; however, only 2 were excavated. No cultural materials were observed on the surface or encountered within any of the shovel tests. RKI has made a reasonable good faith effort to identify cultural resources within the APE. No significant deposits or features were identified during the intensive pedestrian survey. As such, RKI recommends no further archaeological investigations within the APE. However, should changes be made within the APE, further work may be required. All field records and photographs produced during investigations will be permanently housed at the Center for Archaeological Research at the University of Texas at San Antonio

With The Protection Of The Gods: An Interpretation Of The Protector Figure In Classic Maya Iconography

Iconography encapsulates the cultural knowledge of a civilization. The ancient Maya of Mesoamerica utilized iconography to express ideological beliefs, as well as political events and histories. An ideology heavily based on the presence of an Otherworld is visible in elaborate Maya iconography. Motifs and themes can be manipulated to convey different meanings based on context. An example of this mutability can be witnessed in the depiction of Otherworld gods. Maya gods were not like Old World pantheons; gods were fluid and could function in multiple roles. Protector gods are an example of the fluidity of Maya deities. Scenes of protector gods are closely related, indicative of a specific theme and meaning. This thesis aims to define a specific iconographic theme, centered around a “protector,” based on the similarities of the composition of each scene in the sample set of images found on monuments. In conjunction with archaeological evidence and epigraphy, I suggest the protector theme depicts deities in the role of a protecto

Radiation can never again dominate Matter in a Vacuum Dominated Universe

We demonstrate that in a vacuum-energy-dominated expansion phase, surprisingly neither the decay of matter nor matter-antimatter annihilation into relativistic particles can ever cause radiation to once again dominate over matter in the future history of the universe.Comment: updated version, as it will appear in Phys. Arbeitsmarktpolitik in Großbritannien

    Get PDF
